What We Do

The Mental Health Counselors of Greater Rochester (MHCGR) is one of the local chapters of the New York Mental Health Counselors’ Association (NYMHCA), the advocacy organization representing the clinical counselors of New York State.

We are committed to building connections between mental health counselors throughout the Greater Rochester area with each other, with the communities we serve, and with mental health counselors throughout New York State.

Our Mission

The Mental Health Counselors of Greater Rochester (Rochester NYMHCA) exists to advance the profession of Mental Health Counseling and clinical excellence through education, networking and peer support. We are committed to enhancing interdisciplinary relationships and wellness.

Current goals of NYMHCA and the MHCGR:

  • Ensuring that New York State’s Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs) are authorized to diagnose.

  • Securing private Medicaid numbers for New York State’s LMHCs.

  • Ensuring that ALL of NYS’s insurance companies accept LMHCs as providers.

  • Ensuring that New York State’s LMHCs have civil service titles, certificates that allow us to work in schools, and can be hired to work in Early Intervention programs.

  • Ascertaining that New York State’s LMHCs are known and accepted throughout the state as qualified and respected providers of valuable mental health services.
